Requiem of Light Choral Album
REQUIEM OF LIGHT is a newly composed a cappella Requiem by #1 Billboard charting choral composer Patti Drennan. Brought to life by four-time GRAMMY®nominated conductor Steven Fox and The Clarion Choir, it features GRAMMY® winning soprano Sangeeta Kaur and GRAMMY® nominated tenor Brian Giebler.
At its heart, this work is a traditional Requiem Mass, a prayer for the departed. Yet it also reaches beyond: into the ache of personal loss, the silence after something hoped-for has gone, the questions that surface in grief’s stillness. It is music for anyone who has found themselves asking how they arrived here, and what light might still be ahead.
Unlike traditional Requiem settings that weave voices with orchestra, Requiem of Light is entirely a cappella. Due to this, its music demands immense clarity, control, and emotional presence from each member of the ensemble. Voices alone carry the full weight of this offering.
From the fierce urgency of Dies Irae (“Day of Wrath”) and Libera Me (“Deliver Me, Lord”) to the quiet radiance of Introit ("Grant Eternal Rest Unto Them") and In Paradisum (“Into Paradise”), the work traverses a path from sorrow to stillness, from rupture to release.
Patti Drennan’s writing blends intricate twelve-part harmonies with double choir textures, creating an expansive sonic space where ancient text meets present longing. Each movement is reflected visually in the hand-drawn stained glass that graces the album’s cover, a traditional rose window. Every ring within the window illuminates a different movement of the Requiem through thoughtfully crafted symbols.
This Requiem begins in darkness. But slowly, through memory, through breath, through understanding, light emerges. And in that light, something begins to change. It comforts. It restores. It leads us gently home.
