REQUIEM OF LIGHT is a hauntingly beautiful new choral album written by the #1 Billboard charting Choral Composer Patti Drennan. Bringing this album to life is the 4X GRAMMY® nominated conductor Steven Fox and The Clarion Choir featuring soloists GRAMMY® winner Sangeeta Kaur and GRAMMY® nominee Brian Giebler.
A Requiem Mass is traditionally a Requiem for repose of souls of the deceased and this Requiem is no different, but also much more. It speaks the universality of loss - loss of a loved one, loss of a dream, loss of a path, loss of a part of you…It meets you where you are and speaks to that part of you that questions how you got here and where you are going.
This Requiem is also completely a cappella. While traditional requiems intertwine orchestral elements as well as voices, these movements rely solely upon the voices that come from within. There are no rests for the vocalists as it is completely sung through, so it is particularly challenging for each vocalist singing his or her part.
From the intensity and passion of “Dies Irae” and “Libera Me” which translate to “Day of Wrath” and “Deliver Me, Lord, from Eternal Death”, respectively, to the peace-filled “Introit” and “In Paradisum” which translate to “Grant Eternal Rest Unto Them” and “Into Paradise”, the album encapsulates life’s full journey through change or sorrow.
Patti’s intricate 12-part harmonies and double choir settings of this universal text create a lush and inviting respite for the listener.
The score is also illuminated by the hand drawn stained glass you see on the cover. Each single ring of the rose stained glass window is a direct visual representation of the sung movements of the Requiem.
This journey begins in darkness, but as light seeps in, transformation quietly takes root. Every wound tells a story and it reminds us and returns us to what matters most. It clarifies and it connects us. REQUIEM OF LIGHT invites us to return to what matters most and gently be led home.
